The figures in Polixeni Papapetrou’s The Dreamkeepers, lithe in body and gnarly of physiognomy are both young and old. They are at the beginning and the end: young people who take on an adult identity through masks. As Papapetrou's children and their friends move into adolescence, she has created an in-between space of transformation that they can inhabit. A space that is part fantasy, part reality, an unreality that parallels this liminal period of their lives. As quirky as they are, the children represent archetypes of ageing, which somehow match the surrender of childhood beneath the mask. Portraying the wayward language of the adult, the awkwardness of youth or the elderly, or eccentric conventions, the figures are reconcilingtheir inner world with the social demands of the outer world.
