Bondi Cigars have a secret to their brilliance; they write unique, intelligent songs filled with the classic sounds of blues, soul, funk and R&B. Their high regard is solidified by the fact that they combine their original songwriting skills, with a commitment to delivering a quality live show. These key elements have seen the band thrive in the Australian music scene for over 20 years and January 27 they bring this blues excellence to The Gov. When the Bondi Cigars were first gigging around Sydney, in late 1989, they moved in a blues / R&B circuit which, while robust since the 60s, had then been sparked into new life by the ʻblues revivalʼ of the mid-80ʼs, spearheaded by Robert Cray, Joe Louis Walker, Stevie Ray Vaughan and similar crusaders. While many of the Sydney bands from that era have since vanished, become historical footnotes or undergone major changes, Bondi Cigars have continued on, without ever compromising their distinctive no-nonsense style, to become a leading force in Australian R&B; a force that is set to collide with The Gov, January 27, 2012. The original Cigars line-up brought together four like-minded, experienced players (all who are veterans of Sydneyʼs inner-west blues venues) and from the word go, as the 1990 tracks demonstrate, the Cigars have been the very model of the ʻno passengersʼ band, a well-oiled machine with the addition of soul. Consistently one of the countryʼs hardest working outfits (seeing them on the road, more than off it), the Cigars have kept their music tight, driven and down-to-earth: the Australian bar-band par of excellence. More than 20 years after their inception, the Bondi Cigars are very much at the top of their game, consistently in demand at major festivals and music venues around the country.
