Hugo Weaving and Pamela Rabe lead a cast that also includes Justine Clarke, Jane Harders and Heather Mitchell, in a new production of the scintillating drama Les Liaisons Dangereuses, directed by Sam Strong making his STC debut. The deliciously deviant Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont plot an elaborate salon amusement of seduction and humiliation that soon escalates into a brutal battle of guile, deceit and treachery. Written originally as a French epistolary novel by Choderlos de Laclos in 1782, Les Liaisons Dangereuses was adapted into a play by Christopher Hampton in 1985, and in turn adapted for the film Dangerous Liaisons. In the intimacy of Wharf 1, the set is by Dale Ferguson and costumes by Mel Page. Cate: With a cast like that you could run forever in the Sydney Theatre. But what Sam wanted to do was bring the eroticism and the powerplay and make it close and present for the audience in the Wharf . . . It’s about the destructive nature of thwarted love and the yearning for it. It’s a very, very powerful, witty play.
