New Holland Theatre Company, a not-for-profit theatre company based in Melbourne, are adapting the 2001 cult classic film The American Astronaut for the stage to be performed as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival 2011.

Space is a lonely town
In a world of mud-spattered chaps and star-dusted space-helmets, interplanetary travel has become a dirty way of life. Dominated by derelicts, grease monkeys, and hard-boiled space-traders such as Samuel Curtis, humans are traded and dirty work is paid for in cats. Join us in Cory McAbee's space-cowboy sci-fi musical adapted for the stage, as we follow Curtis on his Homeric quest to provide the all-female planet of Venus with a suitable male stud, all the while dodging the grip of his enigmatic would-be killer, Professor Hess.
