On July 15 the Sydney Latin American Film Festival will screen the visually stunning multi-award winning road movie "Desierto" Sur at the legendary Mu-Meson Archives in Annandale as part of the Cine Lounge series. "Desierto Sur" was the opening night film for the 2009 Sydney Latin American Film Festival and sold out sessions to rave reviews. Now Sydney audiences will have a chance to catch the film in this intimate and colourful local venue.
The film tells the story of beautiful Sofia, who has led a full and happy life in Barcelona, until the sudden death of her mother sends her reeling. A mysterious “return-to-sender” letter reveals that her mother lived her happiest days far from Spain, in a remote place called Desierto Sur. Grief-stricken, Sofia leaves Spain for Chile and sets off on a road trip in search of the remote and unknown place. Set against the magical landscape of the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile, an unlikely story of self-discovery unfolds as Sofia places her trust in Nadia, Gustavo and a transvestite hooker.
The Sydney Latin American Film Festival introduced “Cine Lounge” in 2009, hosting monthly screenings in Western Sydney and the City of Sydney of feature films, shorts and documentaries from our previous Official Selections at a discounted entry price, allowing our audience to enjoy Latin American Cinema all year round!
