Description:
The Lompoc County Splatterheads (1986-1996) evolved from a 5 piece (minus Adrian Carroll on guitar) into a tight 4 piece, blending the two unique vocals and riffing of Sly and Christo (or Big Guy) with PT on bass and Micky on drums. The Splatterheads existed at a time in Australian music when the punk rock pub scene was at a cultural peak. Hi-energy, dirty rock 'n' roll was being done better than anywhere else on the globe, making bands like Guns 'n' Roses seem very tame indeed. Power houses like the Powdermonkeys, Bored, Astreoid B-612, Hoss and the Cosmic Psychos had been happily playing for free drinks and not much else for years, continuing a pub-rock evolution bands like Rose Tattoo, X and Radio Birdman had started a decade before. The word Seminal is a word often used to express the potency of this "scene", but in the end, many of these bands didn't get their due credit. Countries like Spain and Italy appreciate what we had better than those in this country that fell in love with the mostly American new-wave of dirty rock....or Grunge as it was termed. As this fashion wave hit, many aussie bands threw it in, and it was only in retrospect that punters mourned the death of many of these bands, somehow expecting they would always be there. Well...some have come back of recent time. One being the Splatterheads, re-animated like a lovecraftian nightmare, for a few one-off gigs and the chance to hoist a c.d.compilation of rare studio and live tracks. "The Splatter Platter" compilation will be out in time for September 11, the Sandringham hotel re-union show. Melbourne's Tote will be hosting the following weekend's debauchery as will some place in Geelong the following night. As a fan, it is hard for me to find the right words to describe what this band really were, did and what they mean to me....let's just say "heaps".
