Direct from Europe, and on their way to top billing at this month's Yackandandah and Apollo Bay Music Festivals, Big Low touch down at NSC for their only Melbourne show. During their last Australian visit they played to small but utterly transfixed crowds. But the word is certainly out now. With a commanding live reputation, appearances at major venues and rave reviews for their work across Europe, Big Low blend ragged country, dirt-road blues and spirited electro-folk with a into a mesmerizing amalgam you'll be hard-fixed to pin down. Using bizarre and unconventional instrumentation such as the self-built 'banjo-bass' (a kick drum with a tree-stump hewn neck attached to it and two wire strings), the 'velofoon' (a delicate sounding Arabic based string invention) and the bandoneon, these guys create a universe where there is as much room for the wide open spaces as there is for Kurt Weil or Tom Waits.
