Born and bred in Ontario, Canada, STA (pronounced “star”), is in every sense the modern-day, Generation-Y producer/dj.
Even though he was still running around in nappies when Melody Maker infamously labelled the work of Bangalter and Homem-Christo as just “a bunch of Daft Punk,” the baby-faced STA aka Stuart Freen, has been big in the Kingston circuit for years now – through his weekly radio show, rocking club residencies and most admirably, his reputation for throwing sex and drug-fuelled parties in the otherwise reserved college town.
After making people stand up and take notice at the beginning of last year with his distorted house re-working of Timbaland’s “Give it to Me”, STA rapidly rose to cyberspace-stardom and quickly became the name on every bloggers lips, with his remixes of Hail Social, The Crystal Method, Beyonce and Joe Budden featuring heavily on some of most frequented dance music blogs including Preston Craig’s Kiss Atlanta, IHeartComix, Discobelle, Palms out Sounds and the French phenomenon, Fluokids.
But so often in recent times we’ve seen Internet hype fail to translate to real world hype. Luckily for us this was not the case with STA, who went on to remix our favourite French girl Yelle and Australia’s very own Tommy Trash. Such a body of work raised eyebrows across the globe and late last year, STA’s debut single “In Living Colour,” was picked up by none other Marine Parade head-honcho Adam Freeland. Released in January, STA’s first official offering is a stuttering, twisted mash of disco, house and electro and features an even filthier remix from one of Germany’s finest, D.I.M.
And after supporting the likes of MSTRKRFT, LA Riots and VNDLSM in Toronto and Brooklyn and having just rocked the beaches of Miami with fellow Marine Parade icons Adam Freeland, Evil 9 and Easter Oz visitor Alex Metric, it’s easy to see that STA is doing his name more than justice.
So be sure to shake off your winter-chills this May and choose the nightclub over the blanket and couch by checking STA out!
