Description:
It was back in the mid 90’s – back when Fresh Prince was still on the tube and bottles of Coke were still affordable – when AZZIDO DA BASS aka Ingo Martens, began what was to become an illustrious career as a producer/DJ in Hamburg, Germany.
With hip hop and northern German electronica influencing his early style, it was at the turn of the Millennium that AZZIDO DA BASS blew up to immeasurable proportions and became a universal household name on the back of his smash hit “Doom’s Night.” The infamous “wamp-wamp-wamp” of this tune reverberated in speakers around the globe, and with two gargantuan remixes from Timo Mass and Stanton Warriors, it reached a mammoth #8 on the UK Charts – a truly unbelievable feat for a house track. Selling well over 180,000 units, “Doom’s Night” not only became the song of a generation of dance music lovers, but was so successful that it sparked a flood of acid house imitations. Later on in the year AZZIDO further built up his reputation as “the producer’s producer” by teaming up with a very young Digitalism to create “Strobelightz.”
After spending a few years behind the scenes, 2008 is looming as Azzido’s biggest year yet. Not only will Azzido be bringing his unmistakably German sound down under for the very first time, but last month marked the colossal re-release of “Doom’s Night,” featuring remixes from an A-list crew that very few could attract. First we see Switch take a noticeably un-fidgety approach that sees strings, synths and effects coupled together for a less rave-y effect. Next up is the Crookers, the hottest thing out of Italy since the Ferrari, who perhaps provide the most memorable remix of the recent batch with a robot-esque theme incorporating computer basses and of course, jaw-dropping breaks. To round out the lot we have Laidback Luke sticking closer to the original by kicking it with a fat, minimal beat and techno percussion and Lexy & K-Paul, whose progressive remake takes you on an acid-trip.
In recent times Azzido has also remixed our favourite ice-cream, bubblegum, apple-pie pin-up boy Muscles (“The Lake”) and Client (“It’s Not Over”), so be sure to catch him on one of the following nights or face your doom!
