Description:
It has been long mooted and finally it is with great pleasure that we can announce that ‘Uncle’ Dave Mason, John ‘Boy’ Bliss and Colin ‘Polly’ Newham have resurrected themselves in their former guise ‘The Reels’. For the first time since the infamous nationwide ‘Reels By Request’ tour in 1987, The Reels are heading out on the road to once more bring us the perfect pop that made us all love them.
The Reels were one of Australia’s most respected pop bands of the ’80s. Formed in Dubbo in 1977, the band toured endlessly and also got plenty of media attention with their early singles, Love Will Find A Way and Prefab Heart. In 1981, The Reels released the classic album Quasimodo’s Dream featuring the song of the same title that over two decades later, the Australian Performing Rights Association publicly declared as one of the greatest ten Australian songs of all time.
In 1982 The Reels set a real precedent. They recorded an album of well-known, non original love songs, muzak style aptly titled ‘Beautiful’. This album was released through the tele-marketing label K-Tel. Thus guaranteeing a vast amount of television advertising, automatic placement in all the major retail stores and consequently attaining huge sales. No other band with such credibility had ever done this.
The mid 80’s also saw The Reels topping the Australian charts with their very special renditions of classic tracks; Bacharach/Alpert This Guy’s in Love with You and Creedence Clearwater Revivals Bad Moon Rising.
In May 2007, Dave Mason released his first album in more than 15 years, Reelsville through the Liberation Blue label. ‘Reelsville’ is – as are the other recordings released through this popular series - an acoustic celebration of The Reels hits re-recorded by the original artist. In August 2007 Liberation also released ‘Reel To Reel’ 1978 – 1992’: a compilation of The Reels classic tracks with new liner notes as written by Dave.
Dave - representing The Reels - was also a more than welcome member of the Countdown Spectacular 2 cast, for the national tour in August/September 2007.
